Digital Smile Design

Smile design is the restoration of the mouth, teeth, gums and lips to the desired state with techniques such as zirconium veneers, composite filling-bonding, tooth whitening, gum operations, bridges, tooth length adjustment and lip shaping.

The gums of the person who has a smile design are restored to their normal appearance, the colors, cracks and fractures of the teeth are corrected, the closure of the teeth is corrected and the muscles return to their normal state.

Smile design is done by the doctor by examining every detail such as the structure of the face,
skin color, teeth and lips. Problems in oral health can be corrected in a few sessions and a successful work can be put forward.

It is very important that the teeth and gums are in harmony in smile design. It is ideal for these to appear in a certain proportion during the smile. It is possible to have more aesthetic and healthier teeth with a slightly longer front two teeth in women and homogeneous distribution of men’s teeth.

Computer Aided Smile Design

Thanks to computer-aided smile design, you can predict how your smile is in harmony with your face after the application before any procedure is applied. A correct smile design is determined by joint decisions to be taken by the doctor and the patient.

  • Composite Filling-Bonding
  • Zirconium or Porcelain Veneers
  • Shaping Lip Contours

Which Problems Does Smile Design Eliminate?

  • Lost Teeth
  • Broken and Fractured Tooth Structures
  • Problems with Tooth Color
  • Deformities in the Gums
  • Face Shape Deformations
  • Disorders in the Alignment of Teeth
  • Incompatibilities in Tooth Lengths
  • Irregular gaps between the teeth

What is the Treatment Process in Smile Design?

Smile design can be completed in a shorter period of time or spread over a long period of time depending on the procedure to be performed by taking into account the preferences of the person. In the first stage, it starts with informing the person about his/her oral structure and dental health. Everything that the person has not been aware of or has been aware of until that day is evaluated and informed.

Serious problems that may be caused by bite problems or gum problems in the future are discussed. By addressing these, an accurate planning is made and a treatment plan is made for both the desired appearance and improvement.

If the problems only involve the teeth and gums, results are obtained in a few weeks. If orthodontic treatment or surgery is required, these can take more than 6 months to complete.

What is a Mock-Up Study?

It is a draft study that shows us how we will get a result before the smile design works. First, upper and lower jaw measurements are taken from our patient for whom we are considering a smile design. The impressions are made into plaster by the technician and wax teeth are designed on it. The tooth shapes designed on the impression are applied to the mouth by the physician and additions and subtractions are made with the physician’s eye and finalized to the final patient’s liking.

Is Smile Design Different for Men and Women?

The gender of the person whose smile design will be made is very important. Because the smile form of men is square or rectangular, while the smile form of women is round or oval.

What are the Criteria to Consider When Designing a Smile?

Age

With the advancement of age, wear occurs on the teeth. The muscles of the upper lip loosen and the muscles of the lower lip sag down under the influence of gravity. In this way, the visibility of the teeth in the upper jaw decreases, while the visibility of the teeth in the lower jaw increases. Thanks to the ideal smile design and shaping, the patient is provided with a young and attractive smile again.

Gender

Men and women have different tooth structures. In women, the corners of the teeth are defined by a soft curve, while in men, the structure of the teeth is angular and more pronounced. In women, the laugh line is determined by a curve parallel to the lower lip, while in men the laugh line is straighter. In women, the two front teeth are longer, whereas in men the difference in their length is smaller.

Facial features

There should be a certain relationship between facial features and the form of the teeth. The ideal tooth shapes of people are hidden in the appearance of their facial features. Making an angular tooth for a person with round facial features will disrupt the overall harmony of their appearance. In this way, an artificial smile will be obtained.

Contour and Shape of the Gums

The visible gum level is very important during the smile. The level of this gives a meaning to the smile. The excessive appearance of the gums will reduce the attractiveness and beauty of the person, while the gums that are less visible will provide artificiality in the smile.

The most ideal gum level is parallel to the upper lip line. The thing to remember is that pink
aesthetics is as important as white aesthetics.

Lips

The thickness and shape of the lips, the symmetry of their corners and the harmony of the lips with the teeth help to create the most beautiful smile aesthetics. The curve that occurs in the lower lip during the smile should follow the upper teeth. In addition, the distance between the two lips during the smile should be in harmony with the size of the teeth.

Characteristics and Placement of Teeth

The placement and characteristics of the teeth should be examined from different angles. These are;

Vertical Symmetry:

The vertical line passing through the center of the forehead, the tip of the nose and the tip of the chin should pass between the first incisors of the upper and lower teeth. The symmetry of the teeth on both sides of this line is very important for an aesthetic smile.

Horizontal Parallelism:

The line passing through the center of the pupils and the straight line passing through the ends of the incisors should be parallel to each other. If this is not the case, curvature occurs in the mouth.

Smile Line:

In order for people to have a cheerful, attractive and youthful smile, the line connecting the incisors of the upper front teeth and the line of the lower lip during the smile should follow each other.

Proportions of Teeth:

In order to achieve an aesthetic smile, the appearance of the teeth from front to back should decrease at a certain rate. The mathematical ratio of this should be 0.618. This is considered the golden ratio. The harmony in nature and living things is balanced according to this golden ratio. Therefore, the teeth should adapt to it.

Embrasures:

These refer to the triangular gaps between the tips of neighboring teeth. These braces are needed to provide a youthful smile. Embrasures disappear in older people due to the wear of the teeth. These are redesigned during the design of the smile and a young smile is obtained.

Color :

In order for the teeth to have a natural appearance, every part of the teeth should not be the same color. No matter how white the teeth are, the parts close to the gums are more yellowish, while the ends are more grayish and transparent. The middle parts of the teeth show the saturated color of the tooth. In order to provide a natural appearance, transparent areas should be created by making some color games during smile design.

Gum Surgeries

If the gums are too visible during laughter, if there is asymmetry in the gums or if there is gingival recession, the smile is negatively affected. In this case, various gum surgeries can be applied to patients. These surgeries include procedures such as gingivoplasty and gingivectomy. Due to the various applications performed on both teeth and gums, a smile design that is compatible with the face and character of the person and that suits him/her is achieved. The smile of the person both affects his/her appearance and helps him/her to feel psychologically well.

Golden Ratio and Harmony in Smile Design

When designing a smile, the condition and position of the teeth and gums, the form of the teeth, their proportion to each other and their colors should be evaluated. During these evaluations, facial proportions, age, gender, skin color and most importantly, expectations from this procedure should be included in the evaluation.

Creating a beautiful and youthful smile can be achieved through the harmony of lips and teeth, gums and facial proportions. Crowding, gaps between the teeth and discolorations that will negatively affect the smile are solved with laminate veneer restorations, teeth whitening, full ceramic restorations and orthodontic treatment.
